Soy&#38;amp;Synth is back for its 5th year in 2023 in an expanded supernova form, conjuring up more artists, partners, and gatherings in its colorful bricolage across 5 months of programming.

Once a month from August to October, Soy&#38;amp;Synth will present a series of 3 concerts in multiple venues, featuring 12 emerging Berlin-based musicians and sound artists from multiple south (South East Asia, South American, and African) diasporic backgrounds: from Benin to Brasil, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cameroon, Indonesia and more.

The 3 concerts will be accompanied by 1 discourse session, 1 audio zine as documentation, and 1 final listening + makan wrap-up event towards the end of the year in December.

In 2023, Soy&#38;amp;Synth casts its spell anew. The cosmic threads of collaboration intertwine with it’s sibling L_KW, an auditory collective that wields sonic activism like a beacon of change. Joining this orchestration of experimentation is Midnight Shift, a label and music emissary nestled in both Berlin's bustling heart and Singapore's vibrant pulse. But that's not all—the 2023 spectacle forges fresh alliances with curatorial visionaries Kim Diana Vu of Decolonoize and Nicholas Kelly of Mixtape Menage, broadening hues of perspectives to its sonic palette.

The first concert kicks off on Saturday 26.08.23 at PANKE with Ruffo + HEARTBLOOD and NAARI + Robert Machiri. Following on last year’s well-received format, each performance from every duo will be a novel, improvisational set birthed from the curated Soy&#38;amp;Synth pairing, bringing these usually disparate music artists together for the first time.

As a vehicle for spontaneous musical combustion and magical collaboration, Soy&#38;amp;Synth once again probes the edgiest avant-garde realms of experimental and improvised music, emerging from the rich diaspora tapestry of Berlin, daring to challenge convention and embrace the uncharted.

All sets will be live recorded and mastered in Berlin. A digital album documenting the series containing all sets from those 3 concerts will be co-launched by Midnight Shift and L_KW and made available for free download, and sealed with a final wrap-up listening party broadcast at Refuge Worldwide + streamed at a beloved restaurant location.

L_KW and Soydivision announced +62 Tour 2020 with line up : Morgan Sully (Messyfingers), Ariel Orah (Ravenative), and Juan Arminandi

Building on our tour through Indonesia last year, L_KW and Soydivision are planning on coalescing audiences of Indonesian artists we have met here in Berlin during the CTM &#38;amp; Transmediale Festival Hacklab+Vorspiel 2020.

As southeast Asian artists working&#38;nbsp; and developing musical/theatrical works, sound installations, sonic and culinary performances here in Berlin, it is important for us to deepen the knowledge of our heritage in both local and international scenes.

Our tour is a practice-led research trip, focusing on building up dialogue between artists and expanding shared audiences between Indonesia and Berlin.&#38;nbsp; We will activate this by inviting local artists in Indonesia to perform and workshop with us, co-creating knowledge exchange of techniques, histories and heritage.

We want to meet like-minded artists, curators and labels that share our love for adventurous and experimental music that blends contemporary and traditional, improvised and fixed, analog and electronic.

L_KW

(Previously Luftmenschen Klangwerk)

is a collective effort of sound and performing art, based in Berlin, formed in 2016 as a part of the Luftmenschen constellation. It´s main activities range from being a collaborative platform, organizing showcases and events, documenting it´s activities in physical format such as cassette, vinyl, and book. Short story is it's a hybrid entity of art collective, record label, and booking/promo agentur, working in the area of sound and performing art.&#38;nbsp;

Soydivision

Soydivision Berlin is an art collective consisting of Berlin-based Indonesians with the goal of provoking a discussion about the exploration and expression of identity through art and food. The experiences they went through both as foreigners and as long time residents in a land that doesn’t necessarily share the same characteristics with the one they hail from forces them to reevaluate their standing in a new society while retaining the aspects that consolidated their pre-formed identity. One of the most significant parts of this particular struggle comes from the different eating habits on one hand and the scarcity of familiar food on the other. Exposure to, and interaction with, different people, mediums, environments and design, lead to experimentations that Soydivision Berlin chose to tackle from an artistic and culinary perspective. Every output features a collaboration with a guest artist to reflect a process that demands symbiotic interactions, prone to unforeseen interventions and, ultimately, never-ending. Soydivision Berlin aims to explore all possible permutations, mixing, matching, amplifying, reducing in a performative as well as culinary context, ultimately translating their events into an interface for experimentations in the hope that it will help make sense of the environment we live in.

Audial Plane

A contemporary platform for projects initiated by musicians, composers, and sound artist, producing and disseminating recordings and releases, performances, to exhibitions closely related to the Triadic notion of Sound, Space, and Place. Considering the ubiquitous nature of sound phenomenon, Audial Plane aims to facilitate the development and exploration of sound in a much wider array than what categorises as ‘music’ where rather-generalised terms such as experimental music are now commonly replaced by sound art, be it sound performance or installation.

Initiated by Bandung-based writer and curator Bob Edrian, Audial Plane is a division of Orange Cliff Records founded in 2019 to accommodate realms beyond the reach of the 2012-founded label’s current focus, cooperating also with Berlin-based, as coined by their bio, sonic-syndicate, L_Klangkunst Werk / L_KW.

Morgan Sully (messyfingers)

Morgan is a Berlin-based American-Indonesian artist who performs as Memeshift, coaxing danceable musical forms from common grooveboxes, old laptops, drum machines, Ableton Live and off-the-shelf synthesizers.&#38;nbsp; Morgan’s other projects include .obat. which emits resonant drones for attentive listening and messyfingers which complexifies and performs site-specific electroacoustic music inspired by gamelan percussions. Morgan’s musicological interests also include ballads, spirituals and other roots Americana as well as FM synthesis, gamelan and live sound composition for theater and ritual.

Ravenative (Ariel Orah)

Ariel William Orah is a Berlin-based Indonesian artist who explores themes related to identity, memory, and scarcity. He fancies the durability of homo sapiens and the fragility of the machines. He is working with variety of media, ranging from audio and sound sculptures, physical and interactive installations, and moving and/or still images.&#38;nbsp; He co-founded an empathy driven artist collective “Formerly Known as Luftmenschen” in 2015 and Bandung-based progressive rock band “Vincent Vega”. Selected works included commissioned installation for Tanz im August Festival Berlin (2016), film-music scoring for “Deeper High”- Germany (2018), solo album “Scarcity” (2017) &#38;nbsp;and “WIM”&#38;nbsp; (2018) under alias ravenative.

Juan Arminandi

Juan Arminandi is a musician and composer from Pontianak, Kalimantan, Indonesia. In 2015, he received his BA in Music Education from the University of Tanjungpura. He has studied musical composition with Diecky K. Indrapraja, and experimental music and instrument building with Wukir Suryadi of Senyawa.

Since May 2019, in addition to building instruments, he has been involved in interdisciplinary project Manangkata, which explores experimental music. He is also a member of Pontianak's Balaan Tumaan Ensemble, a musical community which explores and researches musical traditions from Kalimantan Barat (West Kalimantan) province.

He is now focused on composing and building new instruments.

In this new pop-up series Ariel Orah and Pedro Oliveira, in collaboration with LK_W, Soydivision and Sari Sari, will host and present listening sessions as a form of collective sharing and learning. Starting from but not constrained to our own personal record collections and research interests, we will try to unpack from musical histories that deal, subtly or not, with the (often violent) devices, legacies, and complexities of colonialism. The DJ is the storyteller, and record collections are historical documents of a specific snippet of one's own identity, intertwined with the political, cultural, and social histories. The idea of this series is not to be country-specific but instead to question the very idea of a “national identity”, thus establishing a dialogue from&#38;nbsp; and with multiple souths.

With that in mind, we want to ask ourselves and those listening with us: Where do we find the sound of border identities, of new modes of existing? How do we find new listenings, how do we attend to and witness these listenings? Come listen, share, learn, teach, and eat with us as we dive deeply and tangentially to the history of music history.

For the first round, Pedro Oliveira will present “Sertantifonas” (a term coined by Brazilian musician Elomar Figueira Mello), showcasing a couple of records, artists and songs hailing (mostly) from northeastern Brazil that deal, one way or another, with the legacies of christianity in the process of colonization of the Americas, and the forms of musical expression that challenge, contradict, or convey the complexity of this violent process.


Pedro Oliveira is a researcher, sound artist and educator working with the articulations of listening in the policing of urban and border spaces. He is currently an artist-in-residence at the Max-Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt (Germany) and from 2021 on he will be a Postdoctoral fellow at the Helsinki College for Advanced Studies (Finland). He also makes music under the moniker OLVRA.

Ariel Orah is a Berlin-based Indonesian artist who explores themes related to identity, memory, and scarcity. He fancies the durability of homo sapiens and the fragility of the machines. He is working with a variety of media, ranging from sonic and other multi-sensory performances, physical and interactive installations, and moving and/or still images.&#38;nbsp; He co-founded an empathy driven artist collective L-KW , Bandung-based progressive rock band “Vincent Vega”, and Indonesian gastronomy initiative SOYDIVISION.BERLIN.&#38;nbsp; Selected works included commissioned installation for Tanz im August Festival Berlin (2016), film-music scoring for “Deeper High”- Germany (2018), CTM Festival Music Maker Hacklab 2020, solo album “Scarcity” (2017)&#38;nbsp; and “WIM”&#38;nbsp; (2018) under alias ravenative.

L-KW is a collective of sound artists and performers based in Berlin. The collective exist based on their vision in catalyzing and stimulating flings between: sound, empathy, and cross cultural communication.

Previously stand for Luftmenschen Klang Werk, L_KW used to be a sound subsidiary from a now-hiatus entity “Luftmenschen”. The entity took a decision to change their name in relation to the word “Luftmenschen” association with a term used in the second world war. And due to hiatus and in-activity from the original constellation, L_KW now operated independently, still carrying their previous vision in catalyzing and stimulating flings between: sound, empathy, and cross cultural communication.
Their current activities to reach their vision focus on fostering co-creation between sounds&#38;nbsp; and other possible medium such theater, culinary, film, literature, science, organizing showcase and event, and documenting them in physical format such cassette, vinyl, artzine, and book.</description>
